> Area codes, mobile, 0800, 0900, 0137: what a German number tells you.

- [German Area Codes: How to Read Any Landline Number](https://nummernindex.de/en/number-ranges/german-area-codes/): German area codes are two to five digits long and cover about 5,200 local network areas. Inside Germany you dial a 0 first, from abroad you replace that 0 with +49. Codes starting with 01 are mobile or special-rate ranges, not places. An area code shows where a number was assigned, not where the caller is right now.
- [German Mobile Number Prefixes: 015, 016, 017 Explained](https://nummernindex.de/en/number-ranges/german-mobile-prefixes/): German mobile numbers begin with 015, 016 or 017, written +49 15x, +49 16x or +49 17x from abroad. Each prefix block was originally assigned to one network: 0151 and 0171 to Telekom, 0152 and 0172 to Vodafone, 0176 and 0157 to Telefónica (O2). Because numbers can be ported, the prefix does not prove which network a number uses today.
- [German Premium-Rate Numbers: 0180, 0900, 0137 Costs](https://nummernindex.de/en/number-ranges/german-premium-rate-numbers/): German special-rate prices are fixed by the regulator and are the same from landlines and mobiles. 0180 numbers cost 3.9 to 14 cents a minute or 6 to 20 cents a call. 0137 costs 14 cents to €1 a call. On 0900 numbers the digit after 0900 sets the price, from €0.49 to €2.99 a minute. 0800 is free.
- [Germany Country Code +49: How to Dial and Write Numbers](https://nummernindex.de/en/number-ranges/germany-country-code-49/): Germany's country code is 49. Dial +49 from a mobile, 00 49 from most of Europe or 011 49 from the US and Canada, then the German number without its leading 0. So 030 1234567 in Berlin becomes +49 30 1234567. The common format +49 (0)30 is a hint for readers; never dial the bracketed 0.
